Raising backyard chickens is becoming a common hobby across the nation. It’s not uncommon in several Texas cities including Midland. Still, just because some people raise backyard chickens does not mean it is without regulations. Midland has its local ordinance on keeping chickens uploaded to Municode. All of the rules are listed in the ordinances there. This blog post shouldn’t be taken for legal advice, but it should be noted that people have been known to successfully raise backyard chickens in Midland, according to the website Backyard Chickens.

For starters, anyone who had chickens prior to the annexation of an area were allowed to be grandfathered in with some specific rules to protect well water supplies. Next, if you have a pen or corral for the backyard chickens it has to be further than 50 feet of any private water well or residence or you have an enclosed building that can retain noises and odors. Also, you can only have four chickens, but that doesn’t count if your backyard chickens have offspring until after they are able to live apart from their parent.

For more information or to be sure that you will be compliant in your plans to have backyard chickens, you can always double check with the city.
