3 Amazing Day Trips From Midland
Some of the most popular day trip destinations from Midland include:
- Lower Ghost Camp in San Angelo
- The American Wind Power Center in Lubbock
- Balmorhea State Park Pool
Here’s a closer look at each.
Lower Ghost Camp in San Angelo
Lower Ghost Camp is different from a ghost town, because it was never actually a town. It was a campsite near O.C. Fisher Lake the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built in the 1990s. There’s even a boat ramp, but there’s no water in sight, leading many to believe that the military was planning something big before abandoning the camp.
But even better, the Lower Ghost Camp is said to be haunted by the spirits of ancient Native Americans and Paleo-American hunters who inhabited the area at least 18,000 years ago.

The American Wind Power Center in Lubbock
The American Wind Power Center is a museum in Lubbock that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Featuring more than 160 American-style windmills and located on 28 acres of city park land, this museum got its start when a windmill restorer and collector started documenting them all over the country in the 1960s. The collection had grown into the dozens by the 1990s, and today, it’s teeming with amazing specimens. You can see it from the road, but to truly appreciate this Texas oddity, it’s definitely best to get up-close.
