Sure, most Midland residents are aware of the city’s connection to the world of national politics thanks to the Bush family. But the two former presidents and first ladies aren’t the only well-known folks with a Midland history. When friends ask about your new neighborhood, you can mention these entertainers who at one time or another called Midland home:

Tommy Lee Jones: Though born in San Saba, Texas, Jones was raised in Midland. He attended Robert E. Lee High School for a time before heading to Dallas. He later went to Harvard University, where one of his roommates was future vice-president Al Gore. Jones has received many awards during his acting career, including an Oscar for his supporting role in The Fugitive.

Woody Harrelson: Perhaps best remembered for his Emmy-winning portrayal of a bartender on the TV series Cheers, this actor was born in Midland in 1961. As an interesting side-note, he knew future vice-president Mike Pence in the early 1980s when both studied at Hanover College in Indiana.

Kathy Baker: Another Emmy-winner born in Midland is this actress from the acclaimed 1990s TV show Picket Fences. Baker also has a long list of film credits, including roles in the movies The Right Stuff, Edward Scissorhands, and The Cider House Rules.

Jackson Rathbone: Fans of the Twilight saga will be happy to know that the actor who plays Jasper Hale attended Trinity School of Midland and did local theater as a member of The Pickwick Players. His family has a history of working in the oil industry, which is how Midland became one of the places where Rathbone lived during his youth.

Michael Arden: Last but not least is another former member of The Pickwick Players who also went to Trinity. He brought his love of musical theater to Broadway as both an actor (Big River and King Lear) and as a director (Spring Awakening and Once on This Island).
