As soon as you move into your new home, these are the three things you need to do:

  • Change alarm batteries
  • Change the locks

#1. Change Alarm Batteries

When you move in, check all the smoke and CO2 alarms – and then change the batteries so they’re fresh and will last as long as you expect them to.

#2. Change the Locks

Sometimes the seller will do this for you, but it’s a good idea to change them if you’re not sure. You never know who has a copy of the house key – an old sitter, a house-cleaner or the previous owner’s kids’ friends.

#3. Deep-Clean the Carpets

The sellers may have already deep-cleaned the carpets in your new home, but if they didn’t – or if you’re not completely satisfied with the results, this is something you’ll want to tackle before you start bringing in furniture.
