The Midland metropolitan statistical area has the lowest unemployment rate in the state. It’s holding steady for the third consecutive month at just 2.2 percent. The entire state is working hard, even as job growth slows. So, why has job growth slowed down? It’s quite simple, this area is simply running out of unemployed workers!

Texas added only 15,600 jobs in September. That’s less than half of August’s new jobs.  While you could typically look at job growth to know how an area is doing economically, these historically low unemployment rates are a much better sign of how well employment is going for the state and for Midland.

This time, the slower growth seems to be a natural effect of Texas’ thriving economy. The market is so good, we’re running out of unemployed workers. Experts say that there could be more job growth if there were more available workers. The energy industry in Midland especially could hire more workers, if there were more workers to hire. Similarly, the construction industry would hire more workers if there were more skilled laborers available to hire. Even warehouse firms are reportedly scrambling to find workers.
