If a home had termites years ago, exterminators were able to come through and use extremely powerful pesticides on the wood destroying insects. Not anymore though. The old system doesn’t work as well, because the chemicals have to be less powerful for health reasons. Now, there’s a newer system that can also be used. It costs significantly less up-front, but can cost more in the long run.
These days a popular way to get rid of termites is by using the termite bait system. Instead of going into the home and getting into the foundation, exterminators simply use these bait systems. The system uses plastic tubes that have perforations in them and a screw off cap. The exterminator puts them around your house every eight to twelve feet. Then, they wait for termites, a foraging bug, to find the bait. The exterminator comes back to check on the tubes in a few months. If the termites have started to feed, the exterminator then adds a chemical that will interfere with the molting process. It doesn’t kill the termites right away though. It allows the bugs to bring the chemical back to their nests. There, they infect the entire nest. It uses targeted application and significantly less chemicals.
The bait system usually costs around three to four dollars per linear foot. That’s around half as much as the old liquid termiticide applications. Still, since the bait is monitored every few months for up to a couple of years, there really isn’t any savings with the new system. It’s just spread out over time.
