The I20 Wildlife Preserve is absolutely a treasured ecosystem destination of national significance, but it’s a wild space, not a park. It’s a valuable scientific and educational resource right here in the Permian Basin. The 100-acre upland forest grounds in Midland, Texas is managed by a nonprofit organization. It features an 86- acre urban playa lake. The playa provides a natural habitat for birds and other wildlife and aquatic life.

The I20 Wildlife Preserve is one of the few urban playas protected in its natural state. A playa lake is a specific type of wetland. It’s shallow, round and ephemeral, surrounded by feral forests areas, prairie grasses and ponds.
